Appeal to Steve Featherstone – Author of 2012 Popular Science Article (Brandon Hurd)

This is an email I sent to Steve Featherstone, the author of the 2012 Popular Science Article, “Can Andrea Rossi’s Infinite-Energy Black Box Power The World–Or Just Scam It?” http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2012-10/andrea-rossis-black-box?nopaging=1

I wrote it after a recent failed attempt at editing the E-Cat Wikipedia article, which quotes that piece. That article in its present state, has left me with a great feeling of frustration and injustice in its unfair handling of Andrea Rossi and the E-Cat. Hence, I felt the need to do something about it. The best thing I could think of doing, was to write this email:

To: Steve Featherstone

Dear Steve

I am an interested follower of the story of Cold Fusion / LENR.

I think it is one of the most, if not THE MOST fascinating stories of our time.

I am a former sceptic. I have done a lot of reading on the subject and I have always carefully read every point made by the sceptics. I have strived throughout my journey of discovery to keep an open mind on the subject.

At present, I have to admit to falling in the camp of the believers. This is what I believe:

  • I believe in LENR as an energy source that can change our world for the good (although admittedly, it is disruptive in the short term) and that needs recognition and funding for research.
  • I believe that the scientific community has failed mankind in it’s despicable handling of this field.
  • I believe that Pons & Fleischmann deserve recognition.
  • I believe that Andrea Rossi deserves recognition.

There are numerous injustices in the handling of this field but at present, I think one of the greatest injustices is this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_Catalyzer

Specifically where you are quoted in the lede of the article:

Steve Featherstone wrote in Popular Science that by the summer of 2012 Rossi’s “outlandish claims” for the E-Cat seemed “thoroughly debunked” and that Rossi “looked like a con man clinging to his story to the bitter end.”[12]
Will you please write a new piece on the latest developments around the E-Cat and specifically, the recent third party report and give it your most fair assessment possible?

    Great job Brandon!!!

You developed a good letter, quickly laying out your thoughts. I wish you had been more direct about ITPR2 and included a link, though I do feel that Steve Featherstone likely knows of ITPR2 and will recognize your point.

Brandon Hurd, I know exactly how you feel. I deliberately avoid reading naysayers just so that I won’t get upset.

It gives me comfort to remember that they more they resist the greater will be their embarrassment and that the E-Cat is inevitable. It is a Juggernaut, and those that resist will be crushed, metaphorically speaking, under the juggernaut’s wheels.

      “crushed, metaphorically speaking”
Humph, I guess we’ll just have to agree that we disagree. 🙂

I got a reply from Steve Featherstone. His reply is as follows:

    Hello Brandon,

Thanks for the note. I agree, the
LENR story is fascinating. I also agree that, if true, LENRs could
change the world overnight as a source of clean, renewable energy.

    Based
on the research I did for the Popular Science story, I came away
believing that LENRs are not, in fact, a world-changing energy source.
In fact, nobody seems to know what they are, or if they exist at all.
As for Rossi, I think he gets more recognition than he deserves, not
less. The latest “third party” report, the details of which are mostly
beyond my comprehension, seems to be yet another smokescreen and not an
actual third-party analysis of his “energy catalyzer” technology. That
should not surprise, nor give hope, to anyone. To review this latest
development would only feed Rossi’s marketing machine, which is a much
more powerful source of renewable energy than the E-cat.

    You
call yourself a “believer” in this “science” — but real science does
not require belief. That a paragraph in a wikipedia article about my
story in Popular Science could be considered “one of the greatest
injustices” to the field of LENR research is a perfect distillation of
    what’s wrong with this “science.”

My response to Steve is as follows:

    ———- Forwarded message ———-

Subject: Re: E-Cat Third Party Report
    To: Steven Featherstone

    Hi Steve

    Thanks for your reply.

    The
report is not too hard to comprehend. It states that, based on what the
authors measured, the E-Cat produced anomalous heat and the isotopic
composition of the fuel changed substantially indicating a nuclear
    reaction had taken place.

If, as you contend, it is no more than
a “smokescreen” then either (A) the six authors of the report (as well
as the five authors of the appendices and the two professors who
provided critical reading) are all behaving fraudulently, or (B) they
are incompetent. Since there is at present, significant disagreement on
this point in the public realm, a degree of belief (based on one’s own
personal evaluation of the available evidence) is required. Hence, my
statement of belief in my earlier email. I stand by what I said. I
believe that the authors of the report are neither frauds, nor are they
    incompetent.

    For now, we’ll disagree, I guess… unless
that is, you do take the time to investigate it further – perhaps even
going so far as to interview one or more of the authors. Now that would
    be an interesting journalistic exercise.

Time will tell, which of us is right.

    Regards
    Brandon Hurd

      super follow up.

Featherstone and all the other naysayers would be embarrassed to agree that LENR is real. The evidence for its reality is available in the latest report. It’s a waste of time to try to get them to change their minds. Rather than make a serious investigation, they simply continue to refuse its existence. Their minds are closed. They are a poor excuse when it comes to real science. They cite the non-existence of a viable theory as the primary reason for their non-belief. Shall we say that gravity is not real; we have no good theory for its existence either.
