An article from LiveScience (via MSN) reports on a record breaking achievement made this week in the quest for a viable fusion energy production.
The title of the article is: “China’s ‘artificial sun’ shatters nuclear fusion record by generating steady loop of plasma for 1,000 seconds”
The tokamak reactor used in this system was able to maintain a plasma to a temperature of 158 million Farenheit (5 times the temperature of the sun) for 17 minutes which easily beat the previous record set in 2023 in the same reactor. Still, this record breaking achievement lacked the important goal of getting more energy out than in. So there’s a lot of work yet to do if fusion is ever to become a useful form of energy production.
I hope the E-Cat emerges as a viable energy source, so that there can be focus on a simpler and less expensive way to produce energy. If that happens, I would imagine that it won’t take long for intense work is undertaken to understand the science behind the E-Cat, and many new competitors will emerge.
