Here’s something a little bit different for this channel, but something that I found particularly interesting. It a video is about a new form of data storage that is being working on by Microsoft, who are working on Project Silica, a technology where digital data is stored in glass in 3D ‘voxels’ rather than magnetic ‘pixels’. T
This looks like it is mainly for archival storage, rather than for working memory and storage in a PC or mobile device.
Each glass sheet can apparently hold 7 TB of data. They state here that normal hard drives are good for perhaps 5 years, tape storage for 10 years, but they expect data in glass to last for 10,000 years, (unless you drop one of the sheets!)
